The Drayton’s Chess Club Weekly Chess League (“the League”) is a recurring competitive chess league designed to provide consistent tournament play, player development and organized competition within Guyana.
Each edition of the League shall be referred to as a League Cycle.
The League is intended to:
The player finishing a League Cycle in first place after application of all applicable tiebreaks shall be declared the League Champion for that cycle.
Unless otherwise announced before registration:
The number of rounds, playing dates and time control may be adjusted between League Cycles depending on calendar availability, participation, venue requirements and the overall development of the League.
Games shall be governed by the FIDE Laws of Chess in force at the time of the League Cycle, together with these League Regulations and any competition-specific regulations announced by the organizer.
Where an arbiter is appointed, the arbiter shall have authority over chess-related decisions during play.
Players are responsible for understanding the Laws of Chess and these League Regulations.
Where a situation is not specifically addressed by these Regulations, the organizer and/or appointed arbiter shall apply the relevant FIDE Laws and accepted tournament practice.
The League is open to:
All participants must:
Participation remains subject to registration requirements and venue capacity.
The organizer reserves the right to refuse or cancel a registration where reasonably necessary to protect the integrity, safety or orderly operation of the League.
Players subject to sanctions:
A player who is serving an active suspension, ban or other disciplinary sanction imposed by FIDE, the Guyana Chess Federation, or another recognized chess governing authority may be declared ineligible to participate in the League where that sanction prohibits or restricts participation in organized chess competition. Players are responsible for disclosing any such active sanction when registering. The organizer reserves the right to verify a player's eligibility with the relevant authority where necessary.
A Full League Entry registers a player for the complete seven-round League Cycle.
Full League entrants:
Payment of the Full League Entry fee constitutes a commitment to the complete League Cycle.
Players who do not enter the full League Cycle may register for individual rounds where space and the competition format permit.
Single-Game Entry must be registered and paid at least five (5) hours before the scheduled start of the relevant round.
Registration after this deadline may be refused.
Single-Game entrants:
Prize eligibility for Single-Game entrants shall be determined by the prize requirements announced for the relevant League Cycle.
Registration and payment shall be completed using the methods announced by Drayton’s Chess Club.
Registration is not considered complete until the required payment has been received or confirmed.
Players are responsible for ensuring that registration is completed before the applicable deadline.
The organizer may establish:
Once the maximum capacity for a League Cycle is reached, additional registrations may be refused or placed on a waiting list.
Entry fees for Full League and Single-Game participation shall be announced separately for each League Cycle and may vary between League Cycles.
Players should arrive at the playing venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the round.
Players are responsible for checking:
A player's clock may be started at the official beginning of the round regardless of whether that player is present.
The maximum permitted late-arrival period shall be 30 minutes from the official start of the round.
A player who fails to appear within 30 minutes shall lose the game by forfeit.
Forfeit scoring:
A player arriving within the 30-minute period may play but shall ordinarily lose the elapsed time from their clock.
The opponent of an absent player must remain available until the forfeit has been officially confirmed by the arbiter or organizer.
Players must not record or assume a forfeit without official confirmation.
Full League entrants may request a maximum of two half-point byes during a standard seven-round League Cycle.
Each approved half-point bye awards 0.5 point.
A bye request must be submitted at least 24 hours before the scheduled start of the relevant round.
Half-point byes:
A player who misses a round without an approved half-point bye receives 0 points.
The organizer may restrict the availability of half-point byes during specified rounds, provided the restriction is announced before the applicable League Cycle.
Full League entrants are expected to complete the League Cycle.
A player who intends to withdraw must notify the organizer as early as reasonably possible and preferably before pairings for the next round are prepared.
Once a League Cycle has commenced, a Full League entrant who voluntarily withdraws, drops out or otherwise fails to complete the League:
The player's Full League Entry fee remains part of the League registration revenue and applicable prize-pool calculation.
Repeated unexplained absences may affect a player's registration priority or eligibility for future League Cycles.
Full League Entry fees are non-refundable once the League Cycle has commenced.
Single-Game Entry fees are non-refundable once official pairings for that round have been prepared.
Refunds shall not normally be issued because of:
Where the organizer cancels a round and does not reschedule it or provide a reasonable replacement, an appropriate refund, credit or alternative remedy may be provided.
A postponement or rescheduling does not automatically create a right to a refund.
Exceptional refund requests made before a League Cycle begins may be considered at the organizer's discretion.
Electronic devices shall be governed by the applicable FIDE Laws of Chess and any additional instructions announced for the League Cycle.
Mobile phones and other electronic communication devices must be switched off or stored as directed before play begins.
If a player's phone rings, produces a prohibited sound or otherwise violates the applicable electronic-device rule during play, the opponent may immediately make a claim to the arbiter or organizer.
Where the applicable FIDE Laws prescribe loss of game for the violation, the player shall be disqualified from that game and the appropriate result recorded.
Players must not attempt to resolve electronic-device disputes themselves.
The use of any electronic device, chess engine or unauthorized source of information to obtain assistance during a game is strictly prohibited and may result in removal from the entire League Cycle.
Additional fair-play and electronic-device restrictions may be introduced as the League develops.
Players must maintain a clean and professional playing environment.
Eating messy, greasy, strongly scented or otherwise unsuitable foods at the chessboard is prohibited.
Food or beverages must not be handled in a manner that creates a reasonable risk of:
Where designated eating areas are available, players should use those areas for meals.
Reasonable non-disruptive beverages may be permitted subject to venue requirements.
Players are responsible for keeping their playing areas clean.
Players are expected to maintain a clean, neat and presentable standard of dress appropriate for an organized competitive chess event.
Smart casual attire is encouraged.
Players shall not wear clothing displaying offensive, discriminatory, obscene or otherwise inappropriate material.
Clothing and appearance must not create an unreasonable distraction or conflict with venue requirements.
Players representing chess clubs, schools, companies or other organizations are encouraged to wear appropriate team or organizational attire where available.
The organizer reserves the right to address inappropriate attire and may require a participant to correct the issue before participating.
Unless otherwise announced:
Standings shall be updated throughout the League Cycle.
Pairings shall normally be generated using an appropriate Swiss pairing system.
Players are responsible for checking published pairings and confirming their assigned board.
Pairings may take into consideration:
Once official pairings have been published, changes shall be kept to a minimum.
The organizer or arbiter may correct pairing errors, resolve conflicts or make necessary adjustments to preserve the fairness and integrity of the competition.
Players may not select or reject opponents.
At the completion of each game, players are responsible for ensuring that the correct result is submitted using the procedure established by the organizer.
Players should verify their recorded result before leaving the venue.
Errors should be reported as soon as reasonably possible.
Knowingly submitting a false result constitutes serious misconduct and may result in disciplinary action.
Where two or more players finish with equal scores, recognized tournament tiebreak systems shall be used.
The applicable tiebreak order shall be announced for each League Cycle and may include:
The definitive tiebreak system shall be established no later than the beginning of the first round and applied consistently throughout that League Cycle.
The League operates a participation-based prize allocation system.
As Full League participation increases, a greater percentage of Full League registration revenue shall be allocated to the prize fund.
Unless otherwise announced for a future League Cycle, the minimum allocation shall be:
The retained portion supports the administration, organization, equipment, staffing, promotion, operational expenses and continued development of the League.
All qualifying Full League Entry fees remain included in the applicable revenue calculation, including fees paid by players who subsequently withdraw or fail to complete the League Cycle.
Sponsorship, donations or other external funding may increase the prize fund without reducing the applicable minimum percentage of Full League registration revenue allocated to prizes.
The prize fund may be distributed among:
The exact prize distribution shall depend on:
The organizer shall announce the final monetary prize breakdown for the relevant League Cycle.
Where a League Cycle reaches at least 100 paid Full League entrants, the overall League Champion shall be guaranteed a minimum first-place prize of:
This guarantee becomes effective once 100 paid Full League registrations have been confirmed.
The GYD $200,000 represents a minimum guarantee and not a maximum prize.
The first-place prize may be increased where registration, sponsorship or additional funding permits.
The remaining prize fund shall be available for distribution among:
Once a League Cycle reaches at least 30 paid Full League entrants, the prize structure shall include additional category or special prizes.
Depending on the composition of the registered field, these may include:
Not every category is required to be offered during every League Cycle.
The organizer shall determine the categories offered based on:
As registration and the total prize fund increase, additional categories, larger category prizes or both may be introduced.
The organizer may establish a minimum number of eligible participants before a particular category prize becomes active.
Eligibility criteria for all category prizes shall be announced for the relevant League Cycle.
A player may qualify for more than one prize category.
The organizer may establish a one-prize-per-player rule or another prize-allocation system for a particular League Cycle where doing so allows prizes to be distributed more broadly.
Any such rule shall be announced as part of the prize structure.
Players may not intentionally misrepresent their rating, age, experience or other information to qualify for a restricted prize.
All participants are expected to demonstrate appropriate sportsmanship and professional behaviour.

Registration of minors may require parental or guardian authorization.
Additional safeguarding requirements may be implemented where necessary.
A player requiring a ruling during a game should immediately summon the arbiter or organizer.
Players should not attempt to resolve serious disputes through confrontation with their opponents.
Where possible, disputes should be resolved before the players leave the venue.
For larger League Cycles, the organizer may establish an appeals procedure or appeals committee.
Any applicable appeal deadline, procedure or fee shall be announced for that League Cycle.
A tournament ruling remains binding unless overturned through an established appeals procedure.
